The Best Protein per Calorie at Every Fast Food Chain

If you work out, you probably care about one thing at a drive-through: how much protein you get for the calories. Protein per 100 calories is the fairest way to compare. A 1,000-calorie burger can have plenty of protein and still be a poor deal; a small item with 25g is a much better one.

The best pick at each chain

For each chain, this is the meal-sized main with at least 20g of protein and the most protein per calorie, using the restaurant’s official numbers. It updates automatically when we recheck a chain.

What the winners have in common

  • Grilled, not fried. Breading and frying oil add calories without protein. At Chick-fil-A, 8 Grilled Nuggets give 25g of protein for 130 calories, while 8 regular Nuggets give 27g for 250.
  • Less bread and sauce. Bowls, salads with chicken and protein-forward items beat big buns and creamy sauces.
  • A bigger portion of the same thing. Within one item, a larger size often keeps the same ratio, so you can scale up without making it worse.

How much protein do you need?

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030 set protein goals of 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight a day, adjusted to your calorie needs. For someone who weighs 80 kg (176 lb) that is roughly 96 to 128 grams a day, so a 30 to 40 gram meal is a solid share. Not sure how many calories you need? Build a full order

One item is rarely a whole meal. What Should I Order? builds orders of up to three items that fit your calories and protein, and High-Protein Fast Food ranks every main with 25g or more.
