How Many Calories Are in a Big Mac?

A Big Mac has 580 calories, with 25g of protein, 45g of carbs, 34g of fat and 1,060mg of sodium, according to McDonald’s official U.S. nutrition information. Most of those calories come from the two beef patties and the special sauce rather than the bun, which is why swapping to a single-patty Cheeseburger (300 calories) or a plain Hamburger (250 calories) makes such a noticeable difference if you’re watching your intake but still want something classic and familiar.

Lower-Calorie Options on the McDonald’s Menu

Not every trip has to be a splurge. If you’re looking to keep a meal under roughly 400–500 calories total, a few combinations that tend to work well are:

  • A plain Hamburger (250 calories) with a small fries (230 calories) — about 480 calories
  • A 6-piece Chicken McNuggets with a small fries, skipping the sugary dipping sauces
  • An Egg McMuffin on its own for breakfast, paired with black coffee
  • A McChicken without extra mayo, plus a small drink

Sodium is worth watching too, especially if you’re ordering breakfast items like the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, which has 1,330mg of sodium, nearly as much as a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (1,360mg).

McDonald’s Breakfast Menu Calories

Biscuit sandwiches are among the higher-fat breakfast picks: a Sausage Biscuit has 30g of fat and a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit 26g, compared with 13g for a Cheeseburger. Hash Browns are lighter at 8g of fat. An Egg McMuffin is one of the lighter options on the breakfast menu at 310 calories, while a Sausage McMuffin with Egg or a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit will run noticeably higher. Use the calculator above (switch to the Breakfast category) to compare your usual order directly.

Frequently Asked Questions About McDonald’s Nutrition

A 10-piece order of Chicken McNuggets has 410 calories, with 23g of protein, 26g of carbs, 24g of fat and 850mg of sodium, not counting any dipping sauce. Dipping sauces add 45 to 110 calories per cup: Tangy Barbeque is 45, Sweet ‘N Sour 50, Honey Mustard 60 and Creamy Ranch 110.

Among the items in our calculator, the Hash Browns (140 calories) are the lowest-calorie food. Among drinks, a small Sweet Tea is 100 calories. For something more filling, a plain Hamburger (250 calories) is the lightest sandwich, and a 6-piece Chicken McNuggets is also 250 calories before sauce.

A medium order of French Fries has 320 calories, with 5g of protein, 43g of carbs, 15g of fat and 260mg of sodium. A small order has 230 calories and a large has 480 calories.

McDonald’s doesn’t offer a dedicated low-carb menu, but ordering a burger without the bun, skipping fries, and choosing an unsweetened drink instead of soda or sweet tea (a medium Coca-Cola has 70g of carbs) can noticeably reduce total carbs compared to a standard combo meal.

Every item in this calculator was checked against McDonald’s official U.S. nutrition information on September 25, 2026, and the calculator, table and totals all use those same values. Published values are averages for standard preparation, so what you’re served can vary slightly by location and recipe updates. Add-on calories are included; add-on protein, carbs, fat and sodium are included only for dipping sauces, where McDonald’s publishes them.
